    Aims of our Stem Curriculum

STEM stands for Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics.

Students study ‘STEM’ in Years 7 and 8, where they develop their design and creativity skill, solve ‘real-world’ problems and plan & manage a project. The STEM curriculum allows students to select materials appropriately for the task, work as part of a team and think outside the box. Creativity and risk taking is encouraged. Students complete half termly projects and are assessed against a criterion, using a combination of peer, self and teacher assessment.

    Outline of STEM topics

Students in Year 7and 8 have one lesson a week of STEM for half of the academic year. During that time, students work in teams on projects which replicate real life careers and scenarios. Students are presented with a range of different contexts to broaden their skills and deepen their understanding.

The projects that students undertake have been created by a number of different organisations including the Institute of Physics and Practical Action and The James Dyson Foundation. Each project fulfils elements of the national curriculum across many other subject areas including Science, Design and Technology, Geography, Mathematics and English. The inspiration for the projects used can be found at the following links: http://practicalaction.org/beattheflood http://www.iop.org/education/teacher/extra_resources/ashfield/page_39512.html

The projects studied in each term is shown in the table below.
