Ethos

Bishop Ramsey School recognizes that every individual is created in the image of God. We seek to nurture each member of our community to develop his or her skills and abilities in a positive and ordered learning environment, so that students mature into responsible and caring adults, and that all members of the school community recognize the value of every individual in God's eyes.

As a Church of England School we wish students to grow in the Christian faith. While being firmly committed to this, we encourage an understanding of and a respect for other faiths.

The principle of Christian stewardship underpins our approach to the use of the school's resources. Our approach to our relationships is based on the Christian view of God's love for each of his human children and of Jesus' command to forgive and love our fellows. We base our approach to achievement and the provision of opportunities for development on Jesus' & statement that he came to offer 'life in all its fullness'.

Mission Statement

With the collective input of each individual we aspire to be a caring Christian Community :-
• Where inquiry is prized and where truth is sought
• Where people are valued and achievement is celebrated
• Where teachers are proud of their profession and where students discover that learning is valuable for itself.
• Where there are many activities and where there IS space for quiet reflection.
• Where there is respect for order yet a desire to question and be creative.

Code of Conduct

All members of the school community are expected to behave with courtesy, consideration and respect for one another at all times.

All members of the school community should respect the school and local environment.

All members of the school community should move about the school in a safe and orderly manner.

All members of the school community should be punctual for registration, lessons and other commitments.

All members of the school community should be prepared and equipped for the day ahead.

All students should wear the correct school uniform at all times.

All students should record, complete and hand their homework in on time so that teaching staff can mark and return it punctually.

"But the fruit of the spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness and self control. Against such things there is no law. Those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the sinful nature with its passions and desires."

Galatians 5 v.22-24

The School Governors

What is the role of the governing body at Bishop Ramsey School?

“School governors are responsible for helping to provide an environment in which a good quality education can be delivered. They have an important part to play in raising school standards and shaping the futures of the young people who will form the workforce and community of tomorrow.”

Their responsibilities include:

  •  Setting strategic direction, objectives, targets and policies
  •  Reviewing progress against the budget, plans and targets
  •  Approving the school budget
  •  Acting as a critical friend to the head teacher by providing support and challenge
  •  Appointing the head teacher

Key elements of role

School governors are people who wish to make a positive contribution to children’s education. No special qualifications are required, but enthusiasm, commitment and an interest in education are important qualities to bring to a governor post. Governors must be aged 18 or over at the date of their election or appointment

  • The governing body has a legal responsibility to conduct the school with a view to promoting high standards of educational achievement at the school
  • Governors work in partnership with the head teacher and other school staff to promote high standards of educational achievement at the school

A governor’s profile;

There is not a single ‘type’ of person required to be a governor, the governing body need to be formed from people with varying backgrounds and experience; all whom have a genuine interest in the positive development of the school, the pupils, staff and the impact on the local community.

To ensure this occurs each governing body consists of people from different aspects of the community and school life. These include representatives from the staff, parents, LEA, the community, the Dioceses and the Head teacher.

On an annual basis the Bishop Ramsey governors select which elements of the school agenda they would like to support and focus on, this enables smaller core groups to be formed providing dedicated attention in the following areas:

  • Student and Staff Wellbeing
  • Learning, Teaching and Achievement
  • The new build – strategic development
  • Finance and Physical Resources including the budget and day to day facilities, maintenance and development.
  • Pupil admissions
  • All elements of communications for the internal and wider community

In addition, governors elect to work with specific departments in the school to develop a greater understanding and appreciation of the challenges within that area and to promote and develop improved working relationships with the staff.

The different facilities are: English, Foreign languages, Maths, Humanities, Expressive Arts, Social Studies, ICT and Design & Technology, Religious Education, Science, Inclusion. Governors may also choose to work with the Year Directors of a Key Stage or with the Chaplain

Governors who are attached to a faculty often represent the governing body at interviews for teachers in the faculty

Time commitment:

Obviously to develop an understanding and to contribute to the development of the school, there is a time commitment required. This commitment will vary depending on the number of core group or department links that you undertake. The core meetings include:

  • Full governing body meetings in the evening, once a term. 19.30 – 22.00
  • Core focus group meetings in the evening, once a term. 19.30 -21.30
  • Department links are normally conducted during the school day.

Other voluntary events include presentation evenings, industry link days, musical events and soirees, BR lectures, drama shows, history days, open evenings, interviews etc

The presence and support a Governor can offer our School is not constrained to the rigid timetable of scheduled evening meetings. The needs of Bishop Ramsey, its staff and pupils are many and varied. Governors are asked to consider how and when they can lend that support. It is important that this support is not limited to evenings but can be varied to include attendance during the school day.

Skill requirement

A Governing body should reflect the school community it serves.

Parents play not only an important part in the Governance of the School by representing the interests of the pupils but also provide a pool of additional resources to support the School.

The Governing body would welcome interest from people with a range of skills and experience.

Examples of some skills sort could include finance, communication, education, project management, personnel, diversity, communication, design, general business management, administration and inclusion disciplines, this list is not exhaustive.
